Great start to the year (article from The Star Online)

THE Chinese Cultural Society of the Kuala Lumpur Infrastructure University College (KLIUC) recently organised the Chinese Spring Festival 2011 event attended by more than 800 guests.

The annual event – a prelude to the Chinese New Year celebrations – saw the institution’s multipurpose hall transformed into a scene from old China, lavishly decorated with red flowers, lanterns and oranges. According to the event’s organising chairperson Liaw Wee Jiea, “The objectives of this programme are to enhance the spirit of brotherhood among students and to introduce Chinese culture and traditions to the KLIUC community, especially those from different backgrounds.”

The festival started with a “guzhen” performance, an ancient Chinese musical instrument. Following the opening ceremony, there was a traditional dance performance accompanied the harmonious tunes of Chinese orchestra performed by students from SMJK Yu Hua, Kajang.

The highlight of the night was a lion dance performance by Persatuan Kesenian Gui Qing, in which the troupe demonstrated their skills to thunderous applause from the crowd.

As a closing performance, the university college’s Dance Club and Indian Society presented choreographed dances combining various elements as well as a unique dance called “Embun Soksek”.

Attractive prizes and vouchers were also up for grabs in a lucky draw for the audience.

The event was officiated by Kumpulan Ikram Sdn Bhd managing director Datuk Chong Ket Pen accompanied by KLIUC president Prof Dr Zulkifli Abd Hamid.
